(Munich/Düsseldorf, October 16, 2013) Many people's living conditions and consumption habits are changing, thus continuing the trend towards urbanization. A result of this is that more and more transport and consumer packaging is needed to bring products from rural areas into the cities and into consumers' homes. Material and energy efficiency, as well as extremely short cycle times, play an especially important role in packaging applications. At K 2013 in Düsseldorf (October 16-23, hall 15, B27/C24/C27/D24), KraussMaffei will demonstrate how transport crates are made on a GX 900. This will show just how well the GX series performs when making high-speed products.

Speed is everything

"Our GX series is ideally suited to ensuring very short cycle times when making transport and consumer packaging, without having an adverse effect on efficiency and product quality," states Frank Peters, Vice President of Sales at KraussMaffei. Over 100 GX models have been sold during the series' first year on the market. Machines with clamping forces of 7500 kN and 9000 kN will be added to the top end of the range at K 2013. "The presented GX 900-8100 clearly proves that the carefully thought-out overall concept – comprising a very fast dual-platen clamping unit, efficient drive technology, proven plasticizing units and perfectly coordinated automation systems – results in very short complete cycle times," Peters explains.

The trade show machine is equipped with two high-speed LRX 250 HS linear robots for demolding and depositing parts. The demonstration machine has been enhanced with a fully automatic mold-changing system, which is particularly well suited to producing small batches of parts using molds that need to be changed frequently. Molds can be changed in less than three minutes. The new mold is transferred from the horizontal mold changing table to the machine and seamlessly coupled into place – it is then ready to use immediately. Even the automated grippers automatically change the robot hand in the gripper station.

For demonstration purposes during the trade show, two different transport crates will be made on the same machine, using polypropylene supplied from Borealis Borouge. One will be made using a shot weight of 380 g in a cycle time of roughly ten seconds, while the other will be made using a shot weight of 341 g in a cycle time of approximately seven seconds. Automation technology and machine are equipped with the MC6 control system. The entire system can be controlled either via the control panel on the injection molding machine or via the automation handheld. The company's international and interdisciplinary partnerships with the mold makers Mundimold and EAS Europe B.V. clearly show how KraussMaffei uses its system expertise to increase the production efficiency of injection molding machines.

Multicomponent technology ideal for using recycled materials

The use of recycled materials in a number of applications is increasing due to economical and ecological reasons. One method that allows manufacturers to use recycled materials is the sandwich process, which permits many different combinations of materials. The outer layer of the part is normally made from new material, while its core is usually made from recycled material. KraussMaffei is one of the market leaders in large machines and offers proven MX-series injection molding machines with clamping forces of up to 55,000 kN for heavy shot weights – and the multicomponent versions can also be equipped two or more injection units. A large sandwich-technology machine for manufacturing heavy transport containers, made from up to 30 percent recycled materials and with a shot weight of up to 15 kg, has recently been put into operation successfully in the USA.

A German company also commissioned a 5500-tonne MX injection molding machine in 2013. In terms of clamping force, this is the largest MX-series machine that has ever been built. The extremely compact and powerful MX series is specially designed for rigorous continuous operation. It combines short machine times with quick cycles and a high mold output. The series has a modular design and can be flexibly adapted for special production requirements. The MX series is now successfully positioned in many industries throughout the world and has set standards – not just in the automotive industry. MX swivel plate and compression molding machines for multicolor television frames, suitcases and optical components are just as successful as standard machines or production cells for combined processes using injection molding machinery and reaction process machinery, such as SkinForm or ColorForm.
