(Munich / Düsseldorf, October 21, 2013) "The Blue Horse" from Playmobil enters the race for a message with a broad impact: The power consumption of injection molding machines has dropped by 80 percent since the 1970s. This fact is being emphasized by the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) with an action in the old quarter of Düsseldorf as part of "BLUecoMPETENCE", its sustainability initiative.

Thousands of give-away articles are being distributed to pedestrians in the old quarter of Düsseldorf during "K 2013", the world's leading trade fair for the plastics and rubber industries. Early on Sunday evening after five days of the trade fair, 15,000 of the 10-centimeter-high figures from the Bavarian toy manufacturer Geobra Brandstätter in Zirndorf had already been distributed - and a machine of KraussMaffei is continuously producing more of these figures.

Original mold dating from the 1970s

The retro toys are produced on an AX 100-380 injection molding machine from KraussMaffei, head office in Munich. "Playmobil provided us for the special edition with the original mold, i.e. the injection mold for the two parts of the horse, dating from the 1970s," said Hans Ulrich Golz, Managing Director and President of the Injection Molding Machinery Segment of the KraussMaffei Group.

Using the energy from 1 liter of diesel and 25 kilograms of ABS granular molding components, the AX 100-380 produces over 1,000 horses in around 3.5 hours. Accessories such as the bridle and saddle, as well as the packaging made of biofilm are supplied by other companies. The organizer of the community action on Heinrich Heine Square in the old quarter of Düsseldorf is the German Engineering Federation (VDMA). According to the organization's calculations, the production performance of plastics machines has increased by 200 percent since 1974. 100 percent of production waste is used on many occasions.

Large crowds of visitors

"K" is the meeting point for the plastics and rubber industries: Every three years exhibitors present their machines, processes and services to trade visitors and other interested parties at "K" in Düsseldorf (October 16 to 23, 2013). 130,000 people attended the first four days of "K 2013" at the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Center, a figure similar to the last "K" in 2010. According to Messe Düsseldorf, the organizer of the trade fair, exhibitors have so far been very satisfied with the number of specific project discussions and business transactions.
